Second, I still can’t figure out a evolutionary reason for this,
so it probably is not permanent or it would be pointless.
I think its more of a sickness then life cycle or maybe it happened to so many of them so its seen as Life cycle (like Nehreth for Klingons)…notice the fungus growing out of them.
It doesn’t seem to be a fungus, more like an internal organ. So yea, it might be just the a stage in their life cycle, seeing as they have been there a while and the “stalk” is said to grow; don’t think there’s any pulling it back in now.
not necessarily, exoskeleton animals like crustaceans molt so baxxid stalk and carapace might molt off.
this solar collection might be to store up energy for this molting process?
My theory is now that Baxxid are parasites/symbiots. The creatures we’ve seen and thought were Baxxid up till now are non-sentient. However, the fungus inside them, entrenched in their brains, is. This is a natural part of the Baxxid lifecycle, but the end of the hosts.
This is absolutely hilarious. Like going to a graveyard and the ghosts just start complaining like it’s just a retirement home. I love it.

Also took me a minute to notice the passage of time during their talk, I suspect it’s something akin to how Ent’s speak.
I suspect their clock frequency is dialled waaaay down to save on energy — mobile Baxxids need food and motor control for their movements, speech, motor controls, doing things that they Know What They Did etc. The solar-powered Baxxids in this sanctuary are sedentary to the point of immobility (well, apart from the ones that fall over and can’t get back up again).
Do they have USB-C charging ports somewhere, maybe? That might speed them up a bit.
