Kalgkur is lucky the suprise greeting didn’t lead to two weeks of guard duty by waking up half of Val Salia again. Was pretty cruel of Kuldra sneaking up on Kalgkur knowing why Kalgkur was on guard duty and not caring if it was doubled. That said, wonder if Kalgkur will get to work with Isher. Or both serve as replacement guards for Elim while he’s healing up?
Kalgkur was loud enough to be heard well over a city block away. In a open air environment sound dissipates upward where as underground its reflected back. It entirely depends on the shape of the cavern, but I’ve been in a capital building’s whispering gallery, where the acoustics let you hear the breathing of someone 30 meters away. Baxxids must emit different reflexive panic noises to different stimuli, or Kalgkur just got lucky and held in the alarmed Baxxid cry.
The main difference here is I believe they are speaking in their native language which I assume consists of low frequency buzzing so it would not be as loud to humans; whereas previously when he was startled originally ‘he’ reflexively used the common human language thus MUCH louder.
Baxxids communicate in infrasound, similar to our Elephants and Crocodiles. We as humans use infrasound as a non-lethal weapon. The LRAD used for riots is documented to cause nausea and spontaneous bowl evacuation. That’s what loud infrasonics do to humans. Its possible that the Baxxids evolved the use of infrasonics as a defense mechanism against perceived threats. Might also explain why they abhor violence so much, as if the response to a threat is to emit a defensive cry, it would likely do as much damage to allies as the enemy.
Documented, you say? Could you refer me to these documents? I am aware of several documented failures at intentionally achieving this, would be very interested to know that there was a documented success.
LOL post with links are awaiting Moderation, whoever is in charge of that. @ NIH “Reported effects include those on the inner ear, vertigo, imbalance, etc.; intolerable sensations, incapacitation, disorientation, nausea, vomiting, and bowel spasm;and resonances in inner organs, such as the heart” and @ Defense (dot) gov “it creates the same effect on the subject it is used on as a temporary case of cerebral palsy”
Kalgkur must really be agitated. Look at him rearing up 100% on his tail like a cobra and no longer using his little side claws for support. I’ll bet he could generate a lot of downward force from that sort of position.
As of yet, Baxxid content is the equivalent of Anime Filler episodes, entertaining, but not much for advancing the plot. We don’t yet know much about Baxxid family groups and how they see eachother. We actually know more about Yannit’s people than the Baxxids. That said, Kuldra is part of the ruling clan within Val Salia’s Baxxid community. Insulting her may be equivalent to Insulting the Guildmaster’s family (when he gets around to making one). When you are in a inferior caste, sometimes the only option is walk (slither) away or be chained to a rock.
veil-lady is referred to as she, a friend of kalgkur, and has a cloth with a gold stripe at the bottom, seems like zhretta from the cast page, and zhretta has triangles around the holes in the cloth, as in #163
They are already speaking infrasonically, so the extra emphasis around “human trinket-maker” makes me wonder just how low *sotto voce* can go when employed by a Baxxid.
valsalia seems very good at translating baxxid! here was my attempt:
zhretta: only the work shall not scare you
kalgkur: one does the work, thus they are feared
zhretta: many shall read the plans
kalgkur: this is small [cut off]
kuldra: i am now grouped!
kalgkur: in danger!
zhretta: quickly it is now that me leaving is required
kalgkur: no objections
kuldra: you must hear! the possibility of guarding the trade is partial
kalgkur: no objections. continue.
kuldra: the one that is as same, is finding the metal-worker human!
kalgkur: that isn’t my knowledge! what gives this information!
kuldra: i see your head. your head gives many of this
kalgkur: the possibility was very small!
that’s where the book about kalgkur ends it. the book was published way before valsalia’s one, i translated it in that time. i translated it with just a baxxid dictionary from the library, so the translation isn’t very good. it wasn’t really trustworthy either, the dictionary’s name was something like “how to speak baxxid!”
This was fast!

Their currently underground so it shouldn’t be a problem here.

Sure.

A SUDDEN GREETING
EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!
Sorries… O_O

The “Incident” that got Kalgkur on guard duty takes place in OOP 41 FYI
Kuldra is introduced in OOP 50. She is a high ranking Baxxid, or at least one with powerful family connections.
Would an accurate analysis of Kuldra be the precocious little sister mascot of the entire Baxxid species?
I have to wonder if Kuldra is _flirting_ with Kalkgur, as opposed to (or in conjunction with 🙂 teasing him.
Whatever she’s doing it’s pissing off veil-lady(I _think_ that’s a lady?). Have to wonder if she feels like Kuldra’s fishing off _her_ pier. XD

Kuldra has many wigs indeed! Really liking these strangely endearing Baxxid.
Oh, is this another ship to set sail? Har har, just tie me to the main mast already.
I kind of hope wig girl(?) joins the crew.
