While I could go into detail on when we saw her first, there’s often a list of links to every page a named character has been in, in case you want to know (or remember) who they are. you can find it to the left under the comic pace and above the comic page description.
actually, I am wrong, it’s not their first appearance, but their first name drop. both of their first appearance happened WAAAAY back to when Kalgkur first screetched in fear, waking up the whole town.
Remember, dat for Baxxid, the shape of zheir skull plates shows family connections. Kalgkur and Zhretta’s are very close in shape, showing dat zhey are closely related.
Do Baxxid feel envy? I’m guessing we are about to find out, as zhere is plenty of risk zhat de ole “green eyed monster” will appear in Zhretta’s heart(s?) zhanks to Kalgkur’s actions.
Note that the last time we saw Zhretta, they were showing concern that Nell was the actual cause of Kalkgur’s actions. This could just be concern that Nell is a bad influence, possibly when the next thing Zhretta intended to say was something about not getting romantically involved with humans. https://www.valsalia.com/comic/out-of-placers/oops-265/
This is especially considering that the first time we saw Zhretta, they accidentally scolded Kalkgur’s for being too emotional. This one also implies they have the same father. https://www.valsalia.com/comic/out-of-placers/oops-163/
First time was #41.
Also, the character tags seemed to begin at #115.
I think Kalgkur and Zhretta might just be childhood friends or something, they both snigger at the gorged baxxid together. Either that or siblings, but that wouldn’t provide insight into what Zhretta was going to say here, unless incest isn’t a big deal for them.
Am surprised zhat Perrsurl (de Baxxid being zhreatened by de “dick banshee”) has not done de Baxxid panic scream zhat got Kalgkur in trouble. I mean if not now, when would it be warrantied? Is it somezhing zhat only young Baxxid do? Perrsurl is visibly full of panic, yet does not do what apparently is somezhing zhat is instinct. Interesting.
We don’t know that they didn’t: Kalgkur got in trouble because he did it in the middle of the market, above ground, where everyone with an open window could hear.
Kalgkur seems to have the attention span of a caffeinated yinglet and the impulsiveness of a drunken sailor. If nothing else, that’s a source of worry and frustration for Zhretta, since it’s starting to get him into trouble.
It’s also odd that the gory public manslaughter didn’t bother Nell *at all*. Most people don’t just take that in stride like it’s normal. See for example how Kass and Elim reacted to the first time they had to kill someone. What has Nell seen? What’s in her past? Maybe Zhretta should start worrying about that too. 😮
Nell basically just sat there in shock after seeing Kal splatter the thief. I’d imagine it was later, after she had a chance to process what had happened, that she decided Kal wasn’t in the wrong – she realized it was an accident (both from what preceded it and Kal’s response to the event) and that he was trying to help her. So she opted to come to the Undergardens to try to help him in turn. While Kass and Elim freaked out about killing people (which I’d imagine is a lot more viscerally real to someone than just seeing someone they don’t know get offed), they rallied relatively quickly. Nell certainly has some grit, of course – most people would probably be afraid of being near Kal (or possibly any baxxid) after witnessing that – but I don’t think it’s necessary for her to have seen some crazy stuff before to justify her attitude.
Yeah, I did say on a earlier page dat Kalgkur basically has Bipolar disorder if it applies to Baxxid.
For Nell, I do understand it more as she had stated that zheft had been a thing all too often in her life. So much zo dat Nell had to stop using precious metals for her projects. So dat zheif dat ended up being skewered, had likely stole from Nell before, possibly several times.
Also, remember the culture of ValSalia, as displayed by de humani kids who didn’t freak out when Elim had been stabbed. Violence is part of zheir lives, and so is stomping Yinglets to deazh who steal. Humani dying is just anozher day.
Zhretta wishes to express support and concern for Kalgkur, however the target of their concerns seems to be much more appealing to Kalgkur in the moment, and perhaps always.
the feeling is perhaps both a realisation that Kalgkur most often acts from the heart and Zhretta cannot control this
It takes some serious brass balls to come at a baxxid like that, especially after having seen Kalgkur dismember and disembowel a man with a single swipe BY ACCIDENT. No wonder they try their best to seem as sedate and harmless as possible; these things are terrifying killing machines and this whole arc has been a brutal reminder of that fact.
It makes me wonder what the implied conflict between baxxids and humans was like. The humans must have had MASS casualties fighting baxxids, considering their sheer physical threat they represent and the fact that they can bury themselves to lie in wait for ambushes. Hell screw the physical damage they’re capable of, can you imagine the MORALE damage? The sheer fear and paranoia they would inflict on any invading force? I can only assume it was the sheer numeric superiority of the humans that won them that conflict, since baxxids seem to be very slow breeders.
In short, be very polite and helpful to baxxids. Once their population grows past a certain point, it’s only going to be how much they like us (and our hands) that keeps us alive.
I don’t remember who this Zhretta is.

now… is that disappointment that Kalgkur got distracted by Nell, or sadness as she was about to confess her feelings to him or something?
I guess we’ll find out on page 375.

So now we see the baxxid equivalent of cowering in terror. Interesting.
As for Kalgkur and Zhretta, I’m getting the impression that they’re siblings or parent/child.
