That even Ran would suddenly have the wind out of his sails at the mention of it certainly makes it sound like there’s something horrible in there. Odder still they speak of it as if they’ve left it as-is. I have to guess either a Cronenberg flesh pile, or maybe just the crystallized remains of Kass’ fabled schlong.
But, it was a very nice schlong. I’d make for a nice paperweight, or perhaps a prism to hang in the window.
I don’t see how it could be much of the body, seeing as we saw most of the transformation, and clearly, there was conversion going on, without anything but his clothes visibly falling away.

We don’t know what Ran’s official rank is, in regards to ValSalian nobility, or if he has a military rank. But seeing he and de Trademaster are buddies, I imagine zhat Kass is not in a place to give orders in Ran’s research area and have it stick. It is even possible zhat de apprentices zhemselves outrank Officer Kass zhanks to being nobles zhemselves.
They stopped talking about the calculations they had run and then just asked about what Ran and Kass had been doing. Even if Kass telling them “No science!” counts as an “order” that they’re obliged to obey, I don’t think their question was out of line.
