But seriously he’s in trouble now I am kinda looking forward to seeing what the consequences are for a male Yinglet to upset a female Yinglet.
But Lopin loves being Lopin! Most of the time, not counting the current one.
I sense bozh a good smeking, and for Kass, even for as upset as she may be, to still not want ze poor little guy hurt too bad if it gets out of hand. From what we’ve seen of her she is generally a nice former guy.
What I am really looking forward to is ze possible explanation as to where Lopin got ze little zhing and what it may be.

Wait I just noticed that Lopin’s shell tooth is broken!
Lopin’s many things are broken. Yinglets are not good at smash and grab with large flailing yings; life is so unfair when you are tiny.

Okay, yeah, pretty sure Lopin isn’t actually a guy. After all, how do you make a female yinglet look like a male? You shave their tail tuft off, mostly. But nobody will beat the snot out of a female yinglet, soooo a little cosmetic alteration was probably called for.
Ooooh yeah, that’s some good theorizing! And good theorizing gets me all excited.
I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s some kind of olfactory cue as well for yinglet sex.
It would also likely create a market for compounds that are similar to a natural yinglet female’s scent, given what has been stated about male companionship in yinglet culture.
Remember, no matter how deep and menacing Kass tries to make that “YYYYOOOUUUU” it’s still going to be the high pitched squeaky voice of a little yinglit.
Yeah but to another yinglet the inflection comes across the same. Unless the tone is lost on yinglets.
Gooood, glad to know that people are interpreting the things these little ratbirds say in the proper screechy rodent pitch.
So how long does it take to grow a new shell tooth? And in the meantime what will Lopin eat or who will crack open clams for him? Or will he simply starve for the 3 weeks he will be imprisoned? I am assuming that 3 weeks of nothing to do would feel like many many years to an average yinglet.
Shell teeth can’t grow back, a yinglet that’s breaks a shell tooth is screwed.
It varies by individual! Some lucky few can have a damaged tooth drop out and regrow to useable size within a couple weeks (still a long time for a yinglet), but others can take more than a month.
So yinglets just regularly shed and grow new shell tooths about once a month? Or can their bodies detect the damage and then automatically grow a replacement?
I figure regular shedding is needed due to the wear and tear caused by grinding a soft tooth against the hard stone shells of oysters and their ilk. Though it would probably make more sense that it acts more like a crocodilian’s teeth. The new tooth grows under the old and helps to push it out, then the new can fully express. I could be wrong tho.
I mean, taking Val’s comments about them being ratbirds may mean the tooth grows similarly to a rodents in a way, where the grinding against shells helps grind down and maintain the tooth.

Glad to see Kass managed to get back into uniform. after all, he did work so hard and paid a heavy price for that crest, and the privileges it grants.
Waiting in anticipation to see what he/she does with Lopin.
Oh and, a high pitched squeaky voice, can be just as menacing with the right pitch and quality.

Love the series, and love the species variety. I also love the idea of the Yinglit, but I am wondering one thing about them, what is the max lifespan? They seem to not live much past 20 if they sleep at such a rapid cycle.
That’s great to hear, thanks! And while the exact number varies incredibly, you’re definitely in the right general lifespan.
So we are looking at a lifespan of about 20-30 based on the individual? That makes sense.
Though, now I want to know more about their biology…
On a simular question to Val, he once responded to me that the oldest yinglets live to about 30, but mind you, the oldest humans during these times live to about 50
Very true, but I am considering it more based off of heart rate. Being as small and with their predisposition to basically having a natural version of a humans anxiety disorder, I can’t see them living for very long. I would say the 30 yr old ones are outliers vs common. Partially they’d have to be more intelligent, and more likely to have a slower heart rate so they don’t wear the muscle down.
But the benefit to this is something Valsalia has mentioned already. Their mutation chances. They live fast, hard and scared, but when they mutate, it has a chance to be a sudden and massive benefit.
So interestingly enough, Yinglits could, under the right circumstances, catch up to humanity in only three or four decades.

This has zero relevance with the current page, but it’s still something I wonder about:with their rapid evolution and selective breeding system, how likely is it that the yinglets develop subspecies or castes (I think that’sthe right term) like workers, soldiers, thinkers? It would require great levels of planification over many generations, which is not really yinglet specialty, but they could have a chance.
I doubt it is very fast honestly. While they seem more predisposed to having mutations and such, the over all benefits they gain seem rather minor so it takes a few more generations to make a markedly measurable change.
But they would also benefit more from sudden and immense mutations potentially.
There’s definitely some of that happening on a background level at this point in their species’ development. However, that had more to do with creating their current system for Enclave living, and handling their species’ lack-of-females issue.
Once they’ve established a foothold though, their evolution could go all sorts of different ways.
Just finished reading through the archives after having seen a 4chan thread. I greatly enjoyed every page and am eager to see what directions you’ll take the superb worldbuilding and story you’ve created.
