Indrel arms typically don’t have much more striking power than a human’s, but their shoulder-claws can squeeze with enormous pressure. They dig this way, latching onto a handful of rock, and slowly squeezing their claws into it until it’s able to be pulled out.
Also, most of Yannit’s understanding of humanity comes from the various stories she would ask traveling humans to tell. Most of them obliged, because it’s not every day you get to tell fairy tales to enthusiastic bugs.
Yeah and in her situation that is might be one of the most important qualities in a friend.
With that in mind, so who is the better friend? Yannit or Isher?
That depends. Friends help you move. Real friends help you move bodies. So, which one is more likely to help her move bodies? (Both, probably, unless it happens too often. Then Isher is likely to be the first one to refuse… but I’m just guessing, based on how much she dislikes violence.)
Yannit can always eat the corpse. Have to tell her not all humans are as baaaaaaad badbad as zis one. Be friendly. Keep her working. A worker drone has to work.
Kass is losing his mind… and I’m reaping the benefits!
*slowly closes curtain*
That really was an uncommonly good movie with a ton of good quotes.
Oh, holy upskirt Scotsman! You actually got the reference! That makes me happy.
I do not get the reference but would very much like to know the source.
The movie is The Wedding Singer. If you are able to enjoy a good classic Adam Sandler flick I recommend it. It was before everything he did got samey-wamey.
Too many people are too wrapped up in “it’s cool to hate Adam Sandler” to bother, hence my pleasant surprise at somebody finally catching on!
“LOVE STINKS! YEAH YEAH!”
*gets punched in face*
:O ITS SKOON! I forget the first place I’ve seen you about.
Howdy. 🙂
Oh I should probably mention that I feel like that top left Kass is the most adorable one yet.
“HAHA! Seriously, THIS friend!”
Lopin seems to have a serious case of SELECTIVE SCARED SEEK FOR SHELTER
I mean, sometimes all a guy really needs is some enormous legs to cling onto.
Wonder who her princess (or prince) is find out next dragon ball z …….i don’t even know why I did this reference. Wonder who is kass metaphorical lover
Poor Lopin almost had a heart attack!
And, uhh Lopin, boundaries man.
So they have frogs in this world. I would have thought those would be a favorite food of the yinglets. Maybe:
The ones on this world all taste horrible, or are even poisonous like poison arrow frogs.
They are rare, due to the competition from the various other creepies on this world.
The yinglets have some cultural reason not to eat them. (not “kosher”)
The yinglets have already devoured every single frog in the region…maybe that’s why there are now so many going hungry.
Frogs taste horrible? Possible, but everything is eaten by something, and the yinglets are positioned to be among the least fussy.
Rare? Frogs are common in reality, and rare in pictures. That we have seen none in the story is not much evidence that they are not all over the place. Note too that animals in stories are routinely common animals that the teller is confident the hearer knows of. Telling the story of the frog argues frogs are common.
Cultural avoidance? Yinglets are dirt poor and unlikely to have any such standard that deprives them of food.
Ate them all? reasonable. A new species in the area wipes out a number of old ones. And the greater yinglets are a fairly new species.
I think they don’t eat too many frogs, because the “patriarch of farming” thinks they’ll get bigger in time. Zhen you get to eat ze biiig frog!
You’ve gotten really good at drawing yinglets. Kass is very expressive in this page.
@PrettyFly4AWiFi: “Good at drawing yinglets.” Now there’s a résumé entry for the ages!
Now behave on those imageboards, mmm’kay.
Hahaha, found /trash.
Still wondering how Lopin managed to not wet himself.
He can’t, been crying all day.
What makes you think he didn’t?
I guess we’ll see whether or not his white pants turn yellow later then I suppose. Also tear ducts aren’t attached to the bladder unless they got some weird physiology going on.
I was implying that he has been crying so damn much lately; severely dehydrated our fancy rat is.
And I don’t think [Val] would do a piss-pants joke, especially with how much entertainment there already is in this scene.
Probably right. Potty humor ain’t all that funny anymore once you get older. Still it was the 1st thing I thought of.
So glad Yannit is back. She and Isher have been missed.
Do Indrel have lungs, or does this world just have a much higher level of oxygen in the air? Based on the size of the insects, I would guess the latter.
Haha, I loved the discussion we had a while ago. http://www.valsalia.com/comic/out-of-placers/oops-43/#comment-3662
I think the oxygen concentration may be higher than Earth’s, and maybe gravity is less. Maybe the nebula or whatever could be considered a source of energy. The indrel, tiplod, and their ancestors could simply have hit the genetic lottery for gigantic bugs.
Considering we humans insofar have a sample size of exactly one world to base our logic on, it is easy to forget that almost anything really could be possible on an alien world!
I’ve been working on writing a story for my own fan comic, that I hopefully will begin to illustrate before the end of the year @.@
One of the chapters takes place in the world of Val Salia.
http://pezwolf.deviantart.com/art/Planet-Talahm-2020-673588635
Based on previous conversations with Val, I would put the planet at about 90% of the mass of Earth, just to throw a number out there to correlate with being ‘slightly smaller than Earth’
I was just looking at your map a few days ago! (That didn’t sound creepy at all. </sarcasm>)
Hope it is as entertaining as [Shard of Confusion]’s Chasing Bolide. 😉 That is one hell of a good read! Thanks so much for linking it on an earlier page! Really cool how connected you all are at FA, and the alt/sub-universe the story takes place in. If he fixed the first dozen-or-so pages with corrected dialogue, it would greatly benefit the story. The art progression is absolutely amazing; really got better over time.
First page: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/15534212
There is little to say without spoiling the story; someone just ate some fruit, and now… yinglet. Blanks are [REDACTED] and come from [REDACTED].
I teared-up, great comic.
Val actually referred me to Shard of Confusion in the first place! Shard is actually a pretty cool guy. He’s also been helping me with my story, as someone I can bounce ideas off of. Grammer and spelling are obviously not a strong point for Shard, but Hyratel has been helping with providing grammatical assistance, and I’ve also helped polish one of his side stories as well. Shard has been doing Free Stoned Art for a while, and has encouraged me to start doing Free Drunk Art. Good exercise in pushing yourself out of your comfort zone to do new things artistically. I gotta say, Shard is no slouch when it comes to drawing and I will concur, has been making a LOT of improvements.
Saaay, you’re not on Fur Affinity as well, are you?
No, I’m not on anything yet. Not DA, not FA, not even on Tv Tropes. Never even posted on 4chan, but tempted to do something… Kinda a loner.
You guys got me thinking that I might be able to put some “art” out there.
I can’t draw, at all. At all… But maybe my thoughts and writing would be acceptable…
Thanks for responding. I thought that maybe I went over some unspoken line. I can be an annoying person, and I’m very well aware of that fact. 🙂 I thought maybe I went too far. Might join FA, DA, and become a Patron soon under a more ‘acceptable’ username. Something involving baxxids…
Seriously, I love you guys/girls. Very little makes me smile anymore; yinglets, raccoons, foxes, baxxids, and the indrel though…
Any idea where Shard is from? I get the feeling of some Asian country. He is great at humor; I love the story that has been built up. English is definitely not his first language, but takes absolutely no offense to corrections, thanks and gives full credit to everyone involved. Almost everything seems possibly canon to [Valsalia]’s world.
About a year ago I would have said that webcomics and FA/DA are stupid, boy was I ever wrong! Webcomics brought me back to happiness. Sorry for rambling.
*ramble ramble ramble*
I know writers have their own special place on places like D.A., F.A., and even SoFurry, so it may be worth looking into. Val wrote and polished his story for a decade before he finally got good enough to draw his own story as well. An inspiration for all of us.
I think people like us tend to over analyse and over think the situation, as I can completely relate about overstepping boundaries. And occasionally a few do get overstepped. But this is the internet, we’re all adults, and as long as we are all respectful of one another, it’s all good.
I got a special place in my heart for Sergals and Yinglets, and I will actively try to promote both to the uneducated. Possibly because I am trying to increase my target demographic, but they are good in of their own merit ^/^,
You know, when I first reached out to Shard, I had the exact same question. Turns out, he is a Navy (disabled?) Vet who self identifies as a member of Colorado Furs. Shard is a native English speaking American. He also has an on going series of work called Free Stoned Art, and inspired me to do Free Drunk Art as a way of doing speed art.
Nice thing about webcomic is that it is comics that are not controlled by the main stream media, and as such, covers a much more broad array of stories than main stream media would approve. People may want to look down upon comics, and webcomic for that matter, as a lesser form of literature. However, this non centralized method of telling stories also appeals to a broader audience as well. I do not read nearly as much books as I use to in my youth, but I read webcomic like a Champ!
Ahhh! I just binge read that bolide comic on FA.
The art starts off a bit like an oversized blanket, and it’s difference to Val’s art kinda threw me off (mainly because of our animal instincts saying “watch out! Something is different! Defcon 1!”; But once you get past that alarm, its actually even more like an oversized blanket and it wraps you up in warmth and endearment… :3
…. then BAM! You hit the last current page, and that feeling of warmth disappears and you reaaaaaaaaaaaly want it back (update to the comic)!
I love/hate finding new really good online comics.
Blast/Thank Yous, Pez and TvT!
Forgot! The one thing that DOES annoy me about Bolide, is that apparently no one in that comic has ever heard about what a CHISEL is! So much waste! >_<
Shard of Confusion is actually above average when it comes to updating his comic on a weekly basis. Even Val has commented positively about the consistency and freqency that Chasing Bolide is updated.
I’ll be sure to share your comments with Shard, I’m sure he’ll appreciate the feedback ^/^, *Although I personally do not understand the chisel reference
Lug Nut made me look up the word…
NORTH AMERICAN informal
cheat or swindle (someone) out of something.
“he’s chiseled me out of my dues”
He links to the comic where the bartender swaps out “the good stuff”, hahaha. And the blanks still don’t know just how rich they are compared to… everyone else.
I can’t wait to see what comes up next. Dang cliffhangers!
I’m new to preventing “spoiler leaks” so I had to look up the name they use in the comic for it.
It’s “Droges!”
If they had a chisel, they could save sooooo much! Instead it seems they waste so much because they utilize the whole thing, rather than what is solely (or approximately) required.
– TvT I can’t reply to your related comment for some reason
Wow! I didn’t know he updated that often! Good reason to bookmark it.
He is doing a great job! Please tell him Zev is a great character! (Kinda reminds me of the Anime “Gangsta”)
It’s a good comic for enjoyment and has a hidden element of education (and/or entices one to self-educate)
Looks like the message board hit the end of replies to a single consecutive thread, so I am unable to reply directly to TVTropes. I wanted to share the reply I got from Shard, below
Sent By: shard_of_confusion to pezwolf On: Jun 6th, 2017 12:49
I also don’t get the chisel thing myself. But this, this is something I needed. I’ve been struggling to stay positive for the post few days. Lol also, not three first time I’ve been identified as Asian lol, witch I’m not. Lol my engrish sucks, perhaps I’ll revisit the first few pages and insert the proper spelling of things at some point. If you get an answer to what lug nut means by chisel. Let me know. Perhaps its that no one has viably used one?
Thank you for sharing this with me again.
*I just sent Shard a reply with the definition of CHISEL, thanks for the assist on that one TVTropes
Haha! Replied at the exact same time! I beat you by a milisecond perhaps!
Asian though? I don’t get it
I am happy you are happy again komrade!
You are a very nice person and deserve good things in your life!
Btw, 4 chan is a very interesting place. I just camped there for a bit and the variability of interactions is immense! Some of the nicest people and some pretty mean ones (microwaving your iphone is not a good way to charge it btw :b)
With so many anonymous people, how do you mute the annoying ones, and how do you keep up to date with the good ones?
Replies are doing that thing again… I think my browser hates me >:b
Ditto, and read below comments for the full ditto.
In other events :
When I said chisel, I meant as in the tool a fellow artisan would use in the crafting, creating, or removal of media from a medium/form.
A chisel is a fantastic tool for many uses, and can chomp through many medias (especially soft woods and metals) with ease.
Nah, Yannit would see defending her smallhive as a natural thing to do, while Isher detests violence. It should go without saying that Kass’s bro 5 lyfe would do anything for him at this point.
Writers tend to be more appreciated on SoFurry, formerly Furrag.
For example, [NSFW] https://www.sofurry.com/view/545099 [/NSFW]
Sounds interesting Pez, looking forward to it, always looking for something new to digest.
My own fan story came to a screeching halt after the hard drive I had the only copy died, gotta love technology.
In a nutshell it starts out in a random place in Vals world, goes off world to a world I used in my own comic years ago, and back. Gonna have to redo the pages I already have as I don’t like them, and decided to put them possibly later in the strip.
Already got the go ahead to do it, but we’ll see how the rewrite goes.
Oih vey! Thats gotta be rough! I have 90% of my work saved on my phone. Everything I write is saved to my gmail, that way I am less likely to lose everything if my toddler decides to water my computer, or I get fired from work and can never access my saved files there.
The downside to losing everything is obviously having to start all over, but as you’ve mentioned, the plus side is that you’re given more time to polish the story and clean up the style before your official launch date.
I would love to check out your story some time when you get the ball rolling again!
I was using a speech to text program since writing is a pain, and tried to save to my phone, but most apps no more than a few minutes at a time. I have some snippets of ideas on an old fashioned handheld voice recorder I carry around for when I have an idea, but it’s really disjointed.
The HD was a usb external and the cat knocked it off the desk and unplugged it while in use. Yeah it got scrambled and I wasn’t able to recover anything from it.
I can only imagine how difficult typing would be after the accident, too, so I understand the preference for voice to speech software. As such, that limits the amount of time you can spend “re-writing” your story. But as long as you make back up copies, then you should be good to go going forward.
Also, I hope that in addition to replacing your HD, you replaced your cat as well XP
The reason I bring up Oxygen content is for the same reason that Earth doesn’t have giant dragonflies anymore. Spiracles can only exchange so much gas given that there is no pumping mechanism. However, it might make for an interesting story point if the high O2 levels cause sparks to light a fire accidentally.
They breathe through those holes in their abdomens, which draw in and expel air by expanding and contracting slowly.
Could we see an anatomy of OOP creatures? In a city this size, someone must have collected a few corpses of every creature.
Our giant insects presumably have lungs, even if normal insects don’t, and a whole lot of other features that really only make sense in humans [See boobs, and notice how rare they are on a species basis.] Indeed our Indrel are effectively heavily humans in funny costumes, and with a few strange behaviors to make them interesting.
Our story facts are derived from what we want of course, but we rarely want the really different. And when we do, we do not worry much about how. The dragon flies and we readers are to just accept that it violates several basic laws of nature. Instead, we are interested in how the knight/peasant/girl… defeats/befriends/is befriended by… it, a story where the lion/boss/bandit/computer… can substitute for the dragon.
Our “insect” is there for ?a-comic relief of the stranger misunderstanding a new society, ?b-support for the hero[ine?], ?c-lessons on how to deal with a new element… not for science lessons, which are often enough flatly wrong in science fiction, much less fantasy.
But no, the oxygen content in the story atmosphere is fairly close to “normal”. to allow insects to get this large, humans could not survive. [“The dose makes the poison.” Too much of just about anything will kill you and while I can only guess if that much would kill you on the spot or allow you to suffer for years, it’s going to be really bad for you.]
I did not realize those things on her back were arms. I love it.

Today I learned that yinglets call us ‘flatfaces’ behind out backs, lel.
HAHA When you vote, the image that comes up; gold.
We might be able to move back to /co/. Last Poppy thread didn’t get deleted, I think they got that one mod/janitor under control now.
Give it another week or two to be sure. That guy was certainly overzealous.
Kind of like that guard on a barge I used once. He tried to confiscate one of my gaming books (granted, it was the one with the “cameltoe cover”, link below) because “I don’t like it.”
My reply: “Well, that’s not your job, is it? Your job is NOT to look for things that you don’t like. Your job is to look for things like bombs, or guns, or things that hurt people. My book is not going to jump out of my bag and try to murder somebody.” He relented when he realized that the angry people behind me agreed with me, and he was probably going to get hurt (by one of them, not me) if he persisted.
This is the book cover in question: https://i.warosu.org/data/tg/img/0262/47/1374822489478.jpg
P.S., I filed a complaint with management; they fired him.
(The barge guy, not the /co/ guy. Just to make that clear.)
notices from the newspaper came directly from the Dept. of Health. The law that allowed Hawaiian birth ceaftiicrtes to be issued to those born outside of Hawaii (either to Hawaiian residents who had babies elsewhere or for adoptions) was not passed until 1982. Even then, the actual date and place of birth was shown on the certificate.
Those hands are also good for watermelons. EEENNnnnnnnnn…*Spluck*
Summertime goodness for everyone, whether they wanted to wear it or not.
As Gallagher once said: “Never trust a man with a watermelon and a sledgehammer.” Or in this case, claws strong enough to crush skulls like an overripe grape.
She has friends in destructive places..
Here’s some fun, relevant information (Warning: Game of Thrones spoilers).

Okay, i was less than 30 minutes ago contemplating the most random and or bizarre thing I ran across when doing research for the story I was writing. Note: It dealt with when rigor mortis set in. This by far exceeds that in weirdness
Little Sis, the thermometer seems so obvious once you think about it! I learned the tip from someone else (can’t remember who) myarfl.Lsuea, pruning is one of my favorite gardening tasks. It must be in my blood. My dad and paternal grandfather both worked in orchards for years. I have no fear when I’m pruning and do a pretty good job of visualizing the shape the plant should take. It’s amazing how a plant can be so quickly transformed with a few clips here and there. The only pruning I don’t enjoy so much is pruning that must be done overhead, such as the grapes over the pergola.

Too many r’s. 😛
Uh oh. Kass’ mind is becoming yingletized. He’ll be eating out of trash cans before you know it.
Uh oh. Kass’ mind is becoming yingletized now. He’ll be eating out of trash cans before you know it.
Oops. Sorry for the double post. Not sure what happened there.
There’s not a single panel here that I dont adore.
I remember earlier in the comic someone said that indrel become violently insane some time after they leave their hive. I wonder if this here remark or crushing heads is a foreshadowing of things to come.
Sofroggg
I’m still pretty sure that’s an instinctive baby yinglet cling Lopin did. I await the first time Kass is introduced to the life of lesser matriarchs and we see baby yinglets to confirm. But I believe it to be true because it is too adorable not to be.
Is it just me or does that rear power arm have 2 elbows and a shoulder blade? Or is what I’m interpretting as an arm segment, actually something else?
It is! The shadowing tells me so. So change of question. How did Yannit learn to be so gentle? (Please don’t tell me it required rabbits and “trial and error”)
Because she is surprisingly gentle for a creature with an exoskeleton
I wish I had a friend that could crush skulls for me.
WHAT?! Why did no one tel me Val had a FA account?
So many Isher’s images I haven’t seen yet!
If it wasn’t for the stigma, I would make a FA account so I could comment.
FA actually looks and feels like it has very little scripting in it, and doesn’t bog my gear down…
Maybe I will make an account … someday.
P.S. – Great work in your FA gallery Valsalia!
Have you ever drawn a dog before (excluding goofy?)
Keep up the fantastic work! You are awesome!
you do not have to be a furry to have a Fur Affinity account. Val is not a furry, but actually gets a larger amount of comments every time he posts on his F.A. account as opposed to his Deviant Art account, which is still significant, but gets slightly less comments.
Make an account on F.A. today and gain access to all of the mature artwork! You can be just like any of the other anonymous art stalkers on there if you want.
That’s all I ever did, although at the time I was looking for better way to do digitigrade legs even though nothing ever came of it.
Poor Kass
So Frog
Very trans
While bringing in my groceries, a glass jar of salsa fell out of the bag somehow and smashed on the ground. I stepped right on it, and swore loudly. Mind you, I wasn’t wearing any shoes, because I normally don’t wear shoes when I’m outside. It felt like I stepped on a Lego. So, I walked up the stairs, blood trailing behind me all over my apartment staircase (many people noticed it), and I put the groceries down in front of the door and sat down to check on my foot. Blood and sauce was everywhere. It didn’t hurt, but it emotionally hurt because I was supposed to go on a kayaking and river camping trip. I got blood all over the hardwood floor, which made me angry because blood is to be stored in jars only in my house! It sucks. I feel physically weak and I can’t even laugh at Kass’s mishap without feeling like my deformed heart is slowing down as I get super fucking weak. Thanks, Sal for making me feel a bit of joy in my injury. Your comic has had my back in dark times. (I can’t go kayaking! I cut my foot open, I might die and I have to wait until next week!)
I don’t understand. How can every character in the comic be so cute
Simple: frigging space aliens, man. They ALWAYS know what to do!
Few characters other than Yannit can be better at being heartwarming and being creepy at the same time.
