Hah, knew that Kass could not leave the little one to die.
I almost wanna have that little thing. Is cute, and has a nice pattern.
It does seem extremely underdeveloped, thought. Wondering what kind of repercussions this will have in the future.
It will probably be the butt of many anime-style “underdeveloped” jokes.
How sad.
B-but… what if I don’t have a quirk, All-Spaz?
Well Kassie made a decision to help that Younglet live and I applaud it, and hope no negative repercussions find their way to her. While some would say you never know what horrible thing will come Kassie’s decision, I would like to hope something good will come from Kassie’s decision. And is it me or does that Younglet seem female to you as well.
If vislet puts it together (likely) it could be a good thing. It shows kas cares about yings when nobody is around.
Ugly-cute, but hope that Kass isn’t in trouble for this mess.
D’aaaw, that’s cute. Kass is gonna… JESUS CHRIST, PUT IT BACK!
This comment says everything for me.
Ha!
Is… is that a non-furred yinglet?
It could just be underdeveloped. It might possibly be that this Yinglet’s problem is that it’s growing more slowly than its peers, though this might also mean a longer lifespan. That would certainly be a useful trait in a society where retaining knowledge from one generation to the next is incredibly difficult. Even the adult yinglets don’t have the attention span to really sit down and pass on what they know, and according to the last page, the older ones have a very high rate of dementia, meaning yinglets have a tendency of losing their knowledge during the time they’d be most capable of passing it on.
Most likely is underdeveloped, premie mammals are often born without fur, with the earliest more extreme cases being born without/underdeveloped nails/hooves and still surviving. I love the biological details Val puts into their stories, makes this bioscience major happy 😊
I suppose it does actually have a smaller shelltooth, smaller ears, and a short muzzle. So that could indicate it did take longer to be born than the others, but… who knows? Only time will tell!
Agree
The thought that the younglet might live longer got me to wondering if Kass is going to have the life expectancy of a yinglet or a human, because magic… Kass could end up as a matriarch of her own if she lives long enough. With the younglet as her child… I dunno.
Sorry, Kass, the joke’s on you. Vizlet neglected to mention the rare occurance of yinglet imprinting. You are now that baby’s #1, de facto mama.
First of all, I hereby nickname the younglet Uncle (or Aunt) Fugly. Later in life he can commiserate with Aunt Yanoisyskank on the burden of having an unfortunate name.
Secondly, the last segment of the most recent Field Guide leaps to mind. The bit about The Best One changing how yinglets reproduce: breeding them for earlier and shelltooth-assisted hatching. Bypassing the previous ‘nursing’ state to maximize reproduction numbers and making ratbird tiddays vestigial except for their honkability. Uncle Fugly seems a lot less developed in that he has a tiny shelltooth and almost no hair. Hatched at the same time as his sibs but looking premature, the word ‘altricial’ springs to mind. Also ‘throwback’. And I’m pondering the role an extended post-birth developmental stage has on the human ability to maximize learning.
Thirdly, extending from Secondly, I kinda hope seeing/hearing Cass right off the bat will end with Uncle Fugly imprinting on her. His ability to look/focus seems ahead of the curve, compared to the other one we saw hatch. Imprinting could be a trait yinglets strongly had once but since had it bred mostly out of them (though they do stay fond of their nurses). Cass might not really have an option about staying out of his life if so…
Ya probably know the old Chinese saying about what happens after you save a life…
Looks to me as if the little one couldn’t break out due to a too small shelltooth to break through the egg.
oh little yinglets such cute ugly lumps of mucus
That hand is awesome. The art has really improved. I always read the comic, then go back and stare at all the panels. The older comics it was the facial expressions, now it’s like everything.
The interior of the egg looks more flesh-like than I expected. Looks a lot like the interior of a womb than a egg, hmmmm. Also, love the OMG expression in panel 8, so much “holy sh*t, they’re really going to just leave it, I’ve got to do something”. I’d be super happy if Kass somehow has to take the younglet home, if just to see him struggle with the harsh unyielding hell that is early childcare ( and see Ran’s observations as well)
No good deed goes in punished.
Dam auto correct, Un punished not in
I remember you mentioning a while ago that you rehabbed and released some baby birds.
Did you ever have to help any of them get out of their eggs?
Awww I actually hope he get’s to take that one home due to some very funny thing that happens. I could picture all the guys Kaz knows to be baby sitting that yinglet at some point. I mean it’s not often you get to see a small baby Yinglet and their so adorable.
Emotional butthead. 😀
And then this little yinglet grew to be the greatest of them all.
…”Do yot accept Traveler’s Checks?”
if child is she that Is a big deal for both of them…
That’s what I was thinking…
I couldnt say it better
A surpringly mild reaction from Kass, perhaps this means her “motherly” instincts are showing some. I hope this baby turns up again. Either as someone down the road, or even by imprinting on Kass and forcing
her to take it back with her. Rans going to have a field day if that happens.
Persenally it’s not mother instict, but Kass personality to help each and everyone.
sorry can’t help myself …..
HOOOOORRRRRKKKKKK
ah ya beat me to it
HORK!
Not sure if it’s so much maternal instinct but I’m glad Kass helped it out, Yinglet or not it just seemed like the right thing to do, I wonder if it’ll show up again some time and remember what she did for it.
I get the feeling this little one will become Kass’s responsibility due to her intervention, but that ultimately Ran will end up raising them. I would not be surprised if due to limited resources, this little one shows up in a basket on the steps of House Ivanmoth.
This one looks underdeveloped, but it would be interesting if they’re a genetic throwback towards longer gestation periods. With proper upbringing, perhaps it will end up more capable than its brethren.
I feel ya baby yinglet. I’ve totally been there. Just waking up, then suddenly painting the wall/door/floor the color of omgatetoomuchbeforebedthishurtssobadwaitwhyisitstillomgcantbreathe!
>_>
I think this a girl, because females younglet have smallest tooth than males. If this is true… they is lost many girls… and this explains low fertility of females, they just dying.
I think you’re on to something.
I really like this theory, it sounds like it definitely could happen.
Perhaps it should be mentioned, that from the yinglets reaction, and rather distressed gasp of breath, that the little one might have died by suffication, if Kass had not freed it. Second, it was not rotated in the egg in a position that it could get its shell tooth into the shell, notice it fell out of the egg backwords. The other hatchings came out facing twords the outside. As for how furry the little one is, its hard to tell with its liberaly coated with the fluids from inside the egg, needs to be dryed off and stuff before you can see how furry the little one will be.
D’aawww, Kaz has some mercy and compassion for yinglets after all. Give her some time to adjust to being a her and she’ll be poppin’ out eggs whenever she feels like it.
…Which won’t be bloody often, I’ll grant, but at least there’ll be some hopefully good genes for intelligence being mixed into that shallow pool.
The fact that it kind of looks out of breath worries me, what if there is some kind of brain damage due to oxygen privation? I mean, maybe it wasn’t long enough but I’ve seen that happen already a couple of times while I go chack on my brother on his internship in the hospital…
Oh dear Lord! That little thing is looking rough. I hope that pour thing don’t have down syndrome or something.
Love the comic as always. I loved Kasses little nervous dance she was doing. Very cute.
Yinglets are all born with at least a little bit of congenital derp. Honestly don’t think there’d be much of a contrast with this one.
I think Kasses intervention to save the young Ying might have a lot do with he way he has had to struggle in both loosing a home and almost his life. He/she seems to genuinely be a good person. Even when she doesn’t necessarily want to be.
Losing a home*. Damn out correct.
oooh it looks female! :0
I’ve been thinking that same thing. The eyes seem different somehow. Hhmmm……
Next scene-
Kass, carrying the infant: Hey Vizlet, remember how you wanted to help all zhe hatchlings in ze future?
Vizlet, unsure where this is going but increasingly surprised: Yesss……
Kass, holding yinglet baby triumphantly: WELL ZE FUTURE IS NOW, MOZHERFU-
(Baby yinglet horks again, smiles.)
I just wanna hug and cuddle on the both of them. So cuuute! Also, my theory is that the ‘pink’ on the newly hatched youngling is going to be white fur. Same thing happens with puppies when they’re newborn. White all looks pink until they dry off and the fur grows in more.
