The Val Salian Regional Field Guide, Entry 9: Yinglet Life and Development
Been a while since the last Field Guide page! As usual, the info in these is supplemental to the story. They’ll give a lot of info about the details of the setting that won’t necessarily be discussed by the characters, to give readers a better idea of the world setting, to give more context and meaning to things that occur in the story, and possibly give some observant readers hints about what’s really going on with this or that.
However, there won’t be anything buried in them that will be necessary to know in order to follow the main story, partially so that readers can skip them on their first readthrough if they don’t feel like slowing down their pace to read these, and still be able to follow the story just fine.
Oh boy… See, this is the part where it gets awkward because I have a very strong “do not consume media where under 18 people are boinking on screen” rule whether it is drawn or not.
I know, I know the context of the ages when one was expected to be doing all of this stuff in the middle ages makes it hard to avoid, and species with different life spans can cause confusion as well, but it just really squicks me out and at times is even legally dicey.
Seriously, this is why I stopped reading Two Kinds.
18 is actually not written as a hard age, it is an age agreed upon by the majority of legislature to represent the higher spectrum of adulthood. If you consider it, they could of selected the lower spectrum which would’ve placed it at 14. In some other countries of the world it goes even as low as 11, while in others it is 21. In all in all, it is your opinion likes others worth nothing on the Internet.
they’re also…not…humans? my dog had sex when he was 1, my rabbits bred at one month.
While I think Mr. Squeamish could’ve been a little more diplomatic, he makes a good point. There are still parts of the world, even today, where old enough to bleed is old enough to breed. In Angola, for example, the age of consent is 12. In Japan it’s 13; in China, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Macau, most of Europe, and most of South America, it’s 14. ‘Age of consent’ is merely a social construct. It depends entirely on what the majority feel is acceptable.
And as JellyFaun points out, the Yinglets are NOT human. They live about 20 to 30 years on average. A species that only lives two or three decades is not going to wait until they’re only 5-10 years away from death to start boinking. That’d be like a human couple waiting until they’re 60 or 70 to have a child (which I know is almost impossible, but I’m trying to make a point here.)
Well, that’s your issue to be dealt with and has nothing to do with the rest of the real world. You need to take that small-minded arbitrary rule of yours and find somewhere else to spray it about. The fact that you come here and try to fit this wonderful literary effort into some perverse little mold of prurient interest speaks volumes of how you’re trying to deny some perverse longing of your own. Look at the way you chose to express your ‘rule’: ‘consume media’ and ‘boinking’, selected to cause the greatest feeling of shame that you could. Your attempt to sound intellectual and mature only comes across as ignorant and petulant.
“…this is the part where it gets awkward…”
No, this is the part where you need to turn off whatever device you are using and stop pretending to yourself that you know what’s best for the rest of the world. If you honestly have such a strong morale ethic you would not be seeking it out on the internet. Stop lying to yourself. Just because you have this bullshit rule does not make you better than everyone else.
I bookmarked this at one point to read when i had some free time, and started reading it earlier today, and didn’t stop until i caught up. This story has been fascinating read and hits all the things i love in a story/comic. Thank you so much for writing this!
