Protectiveness/caregiving can turn into love pretty easily. Just like love and hate are not actually opposites. While Kass has lived a life being awfully nice to people who are not used to kindness, it probably has not actually occured to Kass that the effect his acts of kindness have had on them, long term. He may have thought nothing of it. But those he was kind to did not share his thoughtlessness on the matter.
